Grave of Sir Yak-yong Jeong

Dasan Jung, Yakyong, a great scholar in the late Josun era (1762∼1836), was born in Mahyunmaeul, Neungnaeri, Joanmyun, and Namyangju-city in 1762 (38th year of Youngjo).

He came to know about ideology of Yi, Yick and read western (new) science books borrowed from Yi, Byuck, so that he had grown in the environment of practical and occidental science.

In 1789 (13th year of Jungjo), he passed the government official exam and became “Yemunguan Gumyul” but exiled to Haemi, Chungchung-do because he was being a Catholic Church member and returned back in 10 days after being forgiven.

He greatly contributed to build “Suwon sung” by shortening the construction period using his machine called “Gujunggi” and “Nokro” (pulley). In 1801 (1st year of Sunjo) of Shinyubakhae (religious persecution), after being exiled to Janggi, Pohang, Kyungsangbuk-do, “Hwang, Sayoung Backseo” case occurred so he was being sent to Kangjin, Jeollanam-do.

Afterwards, for that long banishment periods, he analyzed the reality of Josun society and went through various ideology and sciences and finally compiled the practical science of the late Josun era.

In 1818 (18th year of Sunjo), being freed from the banishment, he spent the rest of his life to write books in his home (Myhyungmaeul) and died when he was 75 years old (in 1836, 2nd year of Jungjong).

For his 18 years of banishment period, focused on “Kyungseohak(經書學)” and became the master of practical studies(science) and left more than 500 books i.e., 48 books of “Mokminshimseo”, 49 books of “Kyungseyupyo”, 30 books of “Humhumshinseo” consisting systematic reformation of politics and economy.

His grave (the 7th Kyunggi-do monument in the “Dasan site” in Neungnaeri located at the low hill looking like it stares at the brook running around its place.

In “Munwhaguan”, audiovisual and academic presentation about his life and various cultural events i.e. “Dasan Cultural Festival” always being held.

Public transportation
Taking the bus number of 2228 or 167 in front of Chungryangri station and off at Neungnae station and walk for 15 minutes. If you prefer a train, use “Joongangsun” (central line) and off at Neungnae station which will take 40 minutes and 3 times a day (Train name of “Tongilho”) available.(Neungnae station Tel: 031-576-7788)
Automobile
From Chungryangri station, taking Mangwoori gogae (hill) and go straight till Donong samgeori, where take turn to the direction for Dukso and go straight till Paldang daegyo (bridge) and Paldang dam then you will find “Dasan site” on your right side. If you use “Olympic daero (big road along with Han river)” passing by Misari boating stadium, crossing over Paldang bridge and passing by Paldang dam, you will find “Dasan site” on your right side.
Tips for Visiting
Opened 9:00am - 5:00pm (4:00pm in winter season) 7 days a week and no admission fee. The neighborhood of the site is defined as a protection area for the source of water. Please pay attention not to contaminate the source of water (Dasan site Info Tel: 031-576-9300)
